Hawaii COVID-19 Testing

The positivity rate should be considered along with the daily number of positive cases. The rate shows the percentage of all COVID-19 tests performed for Hawaiʻi Island over the past 7 days that were positive. It gives a better overall picture of the current level of transmission in our community.

When the positivity rate begins to rise, meaning the virus is being transmitted faster throughout our community, more of us should be getting tested to see if we have been infected. We should also step up our diligence in following guidelines.

The rate also gives context for the daily numbers, especially when the number of tests being administered are rising as well. When more tests are being done, we may very well see higher daily counts of positive tests.

Ideally, we want our positivity rate to stay well below 5%. Both daily positive cases and percent positive rate are being applied to decision-making and guidelines within the State.
